Ringgold is in Ringgold Township which was once known as Hastings. Ringgold was named in honor of Major Ringgold who lost his life in the Mexican war at Palo Alto in 1846. The area was settled in about 1818. A grist mill was opened in 1840 by Henry Freas and Isaac Cherry built the first sawmill in 1844. The first school house came in 1836.
