Canoe Township:
Rossiter was started in 1901 by the Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corp. on one of the richest coal deposits in the area. The name Rossiter comes from William Rossiter who was one of the chief stockholders in the coal company. The Brandon Hotel, which still exists, was one of two hotels in Rossiter. Rossiter is located in Canoe Township which was named for Canoe Creek which flows through it. Canoe Creek was so named because it was known that the Mahoning Creek was navigable by canoe from the Allegheny River to Canoe Creek which joins the Mahoning in the village of Cloe.
